Consulting Testimonials: A Guide for Consultants and Fractional Executives

On this page

Quick answer: Strong consulting testimonials describe the decision the client faced, what the consultant changed, and the outcome. Clients under an NDA can still say yes. Let them give only their role, share a direction instead of a number, and choose where you use it. Ask when the engagement ends. Use the clips on your services page and in proposals.

Consulting has a proof problem. Your best work is often confidential, your clients are senior people who guard their time, and your results depend on decisions that the client made. A generic "great to work with" line does not help a prospect who must justify your fee to a board.

This page is for independent consultants and fractional executives (for example a fractional chief sales officer, CMO or CFO). It gives labeled template wording, 3 video questions and ways to handle NDAs. It also gives a timing plan for clients who pay through Stripe, and a tool comparison with prices checked in October 2026.

Why testimonials matter for consultants

Testimonials matter because consulting is sold on reputation, and a testimonial is reputation in a form that a stranger can see. The Hinge Research Institute surveyed 822 buyers and 533 providers of professional services for its study How Buyers Buy Professional Services. It found that a good reputation is "the single most important characteristic" when buyers choose a firm.

The same study shows that most consultants do not ask. 69% of buyers said that they are "very willing to recommend their service provider". Hinge also asks why many clients never make a referral. Its answer: "Almost three quarters of the time", nobody asked them for one. The article page does not give the study year, so treat the numbers as directional.

A testimonial turns that willingness into proof for buyers who do not know your past clients. It also works when a referral cannot: on your website, in a proposal, and in front of a board member who never met you.

Key takeaway: Most satisfied clients are willing to vouch for you. The work is to ask in a way that is easy and safe for them.

What a strong consulting testimonial looks like

A strong consulting testimonial follows the decision, not the deliverable. It has four parts: the decision the client faced, what the consultant changed, the outcome, and who the client is.

Part Weak version Strong version
Decision "We needed strategy help" "We had to choose between two markets with one sales team"
Change "Very insightful" "He interviewed 12 of our lost deals and showed us that price was not the reason"
Outcome "Huge impact" "We rebuilt the sales process in one quarter and the board approved the plan"
Who "A. Client" Role, industry and size: "CEO, 40-person logistics software company"

The "change" line carries the most value. Prospects cannot test your judgment before they hire you. A specific example of how you think is the closest thing to a free sample.

Template wording

The examples below are templates, not real clients. Use them only to show a client the shape of a useful answer.

Template: strategy consultant

"We had to decide [decision] and the team did not agree. [Consultant] [one specific action, for example 'talked to our ten largest customers in two weeks']. That showed us [insight]. We chose [option], and [outcome with a time frame]."

Template: fractional chief sales officer

"As a [company stage] company, we could not hire a full-time head of sales yet. [Name] worked with us [number] days a week. In the first [time frame], [one change, for example 'we wrote down our sales process for the first time']. Now [outcome, for example 'two new reps close deals without me on every call']."

Template: client under an NDA

"I cannot share the details of the project. I can say that we faced [type of decision], and [Consultant] helped us [type of change]. The result was [direction, for example 'a faster decision than we expected']. I would hire [Consultant] again for [type of problem]."

The NDA template shows something important. A testimonial with no numbers and no company name can still be specific about the type of problem and the type of help.

3 video questions to ask consulting clients

Ask three questions that follow the decision: the decision, the change, the outcome. Senior clients answer better when the questions are about their business, not about you.

  1. "What decision or problem were you facing when we started?" This gives a prospect a situation they recognize.
  2. "What did we change in how you work or decide?" This gets the "change" line that proves your method.
  3. "What is the outcome so far, in whatever terms you can share?" "In whatever terms you can share" tells the client that a direction or a percentage is fine.

For more question sets, see testimonial questions by goal and business type.

How to get a testimonial from a client under an NDA

Ask what the client can share, and offer them options. Only the client knows what their NDA allows. Let the client decide what is safe to say.

Offer these options in your request:

  1. Attribution by role. "CEO, logistics software company" instead of a name and a logo.
  2. A direction instead of a number. "Faster", "doubled" or "the board approved it" instead of a revenue figure.
  3. The type of problem, not the problem. "A market-entry decision" instead of the market.
  4. Control of use. The client chooses where you can show it.
  5. A way out. The client can withdraw the testimonial later.

With Proven Praise, the client types their own display name and an optional title, so the client controls how they are named. On the recording page, the client chooses website, social media or ads use. Website permission is necessary to send. The client can remove the testimonial at any time from its verification page, and Proven Praise then deletes the video files.

Your fee also stays private. The verification page shows the payment date, an amount range (for example "$100-500") and "through Stripe". It never shows the client's email, card, exact amount or Stripe charge ID. So a prospect sees proof that the client paid you, without your rate.

Results claims need care

Consultants often quote results, and results claims have rules in the United States. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains this in FTC's Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking. It says that "Endorsements claiming specific results usually will be interpreted to mean" that other clients can expect them. It also says that "Results not typical" does not change that. If one client's result is exceptional, do not present it as normal.

When and how to ask

Ask when the engagement ends, or at a clear milestone, while the client still remembers the "before". For a fractional executive on a monthly retainer, a good milestone is the first decision or process that the client now runs without you.

Many consultants invoice through Stripe. In Proven Praise, the request goes out after the client's first Stripe payment plus a wait that you set, up to 60 days. The default is 7 days. Each client gets one request only, even when they pay every month.

Engagement When to ask Example setting
Project of 2-6 weeks At the final presentation A wait of the project length plus 1 week
Project of 2 months or more At a milestone the client has seen A wait of 60 days (the maximum)
Fractional retainer After the first decision or process that changed A wait of 45-60 days
Workshop or one-day session A few days after the session A wait of 3-7 days

The wait is one setting for all clients. If a client reaches the milestone early, select Send now in the requests table. If your engagements are longer than 60 days, the automatic request arrives before the end, so frame your questions around the change so far. Setup is in the getting started guide.

Steps

  1. Connect Stripe with the read-only Stripe App. It reads customers and charges and never gets write access.
  2. Set the wait from the table above.
  3. Write your 3 questions in Settings.
  4. In your close-out meeting, say that a short request will come by email, and that the client controls how they are named.
  5. The client gets one email. One reminder follows 4 days later if they do not open the link, then no more emails.
  6. Read the transcript. Approve or reject the testimonial before it goes public.

The client records a video of up to 3 minutes in the browser, with no app and no account, or writes a text instead. Some clients choose text. Accept it: a specific written testimonial is better than no testimonial.

Where to use consulting testimonials

Use each testimonial where a prospect makes a decision about you. For a consultant, that is the services page, the proposal and the first call, more than the home page.

Place What to use Why
Services page One clip for each service, from a client of that service The prospect sees proof for the exact help they need
Proposals A link to a hosted wall or one verification page, plus the written quote A PDF cannot run an embed, and a decision-maker can check the link
About page The "change" clip that shows how you think It shows your method in a client's words
Booking or contact page The "Verified customer" badge Trust at the moment of the inquiry
LinkedIn posts A clip, only if the client allowed social media use Respect the use scope that the client chose

Proven Praise has three embeds, each one script tag: a wall (grid or carousel layout), a single testimonial card and a badge (embed docs). Each wall also has a hosted page that you can link from a proposal. The AI cuts 1-3 captioned clips and one quote from the transcript, and it never changes the client's words.

Testimonial tools for consultants

Choose by what you need most: proof that the client paid, a polished studio-style video, or a large text library. The facts below come from each vendor's pricing page, checked on October 23, 2026.

Tool Free plan Entry paid price Best fit
Proven Praise 3 video testimonials in total, manual links, 720p Starter $29/month or $290/year (25 new videos per month) Consultants paid through Stripe who want proof of payment without showing their fee
Vocal Video 5 published videos, 720p, watermark Essential $99/month, billed yearly at $1,188 Consultants who want polished, edited video for a brand
Senja 15 video and text testimonials, Senja branding Starter $29/month, unlimited testimonials Consultants who collect many text testimonials and import them from other platforms
Testimonial.to 10 text and 2 video testimonials in total Starter $25/month (2 videos in total) Consultants who mostly import LinkedIn and X posts

Vocal Video is stronger for production quality, and its Pro plan adds a kiosk mode for live events. Senja added a Stripe integration on May 29, 2026 that sends invites to new Stripe customers (Senja changelog). Proven Praise is different in one way that matters for consultants. Each testimonial links to a public verification page with a record signed with an Ed25519 key. Anyone can check it.

Proven Praise works only with Stripe payments. If your clients pay by bank transfer, it cannot verify them. On paid plans, you can also run Proven Praise from Claude and other AI tools through an MCP server and an HTTP API (MCP docs). For example, you can review new testimonials and choose quotes.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good consulting testimonial?

A good consulting testimonial describes the decision the client faced, what the consultant changed, and the outcome. It names the client by role, industry and company size if a name is not possible. The "what changed" line is the most valuable, because it shows a prospect how you think.

How do I get a testimonial when the client has an NDA?

Ask what the client can share, and offer options. They can give a role instead of a name, a direction instead of a number, and the type of problem instead of details. Let the client choose where you use it and allow them to withdraw it later. Most clients can say something useful.

When should a consultant ask for a testimonial?

Ask at the end of the engagement or at a clear milestone. Examples are the final presentation, or the first decision that the client now makes without you. Ask while the client still remembers the situation before you started. Tell them in the close-out meeting that the request is coming.

How should fractional executives collect testimonials?

A fractional executive, such as a fractional chief sales officer, should ask after the first lasting change. An example is a sales process that now runs without them. On a monthly Stripe retainer, a wait of 45-60 days after the first payment fits most engagements. Ask the founder or CEO, who saw the change.

Can I quote a client's results in my testimonials?

Yes, if the result is true and you can support it. The FTC says that a testimonial with specific results usually implies that other clients will get similar results. If one result is exceptional, disclose what clients generally get. A label such as "Results not typical" is not enough.

Should consultants use video or written testimonials?

Offer both. Video shows a real person and a real voice. Some executives prefer to write, and a specific written testimonial is still strong. Proven Praise lets the client choose video of up to 3 minutes or text on the same page.

Conclusion

  1. Build each testimonial around the decision, the change and the outcome.
  2. Make NDA clients comfortable: attribution by role, a direction instead of a number, and full control of use.
  3. Ask at the end of the engagement or at the first lasting change.
  4. Use the clips on your services page and in proposals, where the buying decision happens.
  5. Keep every result true and representative.
